We interrupt this John King blog…

Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Posted by: Mebz

…to bring you a Rory Stewart themed post.  Please pardon the delay in JK related infotainment.  John King blogging will resume later in the week.  But for now, sit back and enjoy one of Scotland’s gifts to humanity; along with kilts, Scotch and Billy Connolly: Rory Stewart.

I am not going to go into an explanation of who he is simply because I could not come close to doing his life justice.  However, the following links are articles that will give you a good primer.

Can Rory Stewart fix Afghanistan?

Moving on now to a few articles written by Rory Stewart:

Iraq: The Question

How to Save Afghanistan– this one caused a stir.

And now the YouTube offerings:

His books can be found here at Amazon.  Both of my copies of The Places in Between and The Prince of the Marshes are worn, stained and dog-eared.  They are well worth the money and should be required reading for anyone trying to understand our attempts (and failures) at state-building.

If you missed his interview with Fareed Zakaria on GPS last month, do yourself a favor and watch it: part 1  part 2

Why have I taken the time to put this together?  I’ll tell you, it’s because when I hear Rory speak about the issues the world faces today, I am comforted by the knowledge that there are in fact smart people out there working very hard to fix our problems and make the world just a little bit better.  Mr. Stewart’s honest and frank assessment of our abilities and limitations is a welcomed voice on the world stage. For those of you who are already Rory Stewart fans, I’m sure this is all old stuff to you, but if you are new, by all means check him out.  And after reading this, if you are thinking that his story would make a good movie- you would be right.

Alright, this is turning into far too long a post and I haven’t even said anything about Turquoise Mountain or Harvard or the fact that he’s only 35- ahh! There is simply too much Rory-awesomeness to fit into one post.  Sorry, if it wasn’t overtly funny, either.  I will try better next time.  And I promise more JK fun soon.  Later.

May The Force Be With You

Wednesday, 04.23.08 Posted By Millie

Ok so another Primary has come and gone… and the question begs to be asked, well now what? This is really getting to be like a weird episode of the Twilight Zone… seriously, can the Dems keep on going like this for the next several months? I am no political expert and I am just giving my humble opinion, but it seems like someone, somewhere, could come to a “gentleman’s agreement” on how to move forward. Ok let me be politically correct as there is a woman running for President: “Gentlepersons Agreement”…

AC pointed out a great link yesterday from a New York Times Article about John. It was a intresting article, because we rarely get to read something about John that delves into a bit more detail. Of course from the very beginning on, we’ve always known John is a very private person, but it is still nonetheless interesting to find out a little more about our favorite CNN reporter/substitute anchor/magic map master.

And check out the picture posted along with that article:

This would be a great submission for “Beat 360”. My caption would be, “Hey, don’t shoot the messenger.”

I’ve mentioned in passing before that I LOVE Star Wars. ANY reference to Star Wars just puts a smile on my face. So I was tickled pink when the NY Times author wrote “his bosses paired him with a device that would become the C-3PO to his Luke Skywalker.” John, May The Force Be With You!!!

Mebz stated in the comments of yesterday’s post that she does not follow American Idol so she has no idea who Jason Castro is. Well, Mebz, there are only two singers whose crooning voices give me goosebumps.

and B:

Here is a YouTube video of Jason’s performance last night… after which he later made a mad dash in his limo to catch our primary party. Let’s hope he gets sent to the “safe” chair tonight!

Happy Wednesday everyone and take care!

It’s Raining Here, AGAIN.

Friday, 04.18.08 Posted by: Mebz

I’m THIS close to building an Arc. (Millie, you gather the animals) Anyway, the weekend is officially within reach. And since it’s Friday I have your:

John King Picture of the Week:

In addition, JK filled in on The Situation Room yesterday while Wolf-dog was hangin’ with the Pope.

Hey AC, I found something I think we need at our next primary party:

radiotvf 051.JPG

Nothin’ says class quite like a CNN ice sculpture. (On a side note, as someone who has made ice sculptures in the past, trust me when I tell you that “C” must have been b**** to get right.)

That’s all for now. See you guys next week.

I know what you’re thinking: “Hey wait, it’s not Friday, why is Mebz posting?”  Well our own dear Kitten, could not post this evening.  So, I’ll be giving you your daily John King fix.  Wait, maybe that’s CNN’s job…

If you saw the Daily Show last night, this makes sense.  If not, check out the link:  Burger King.

And now… subbing For Mr. King, It’s Mr. King!

Wednesday 03.12.08 Posted By: Millie

Good afternoon all. I thought I’d start out this post with the following bit of nostalgia. Remember this toy?

I had one of these back when I was about 7 or so, and gosh-darnit, I still remember that very rooster on the packaging on the box! I loved my light-brite. It was a pain in the rear and very tedious to get all the colored pegs exactly where you wanted them, but the end results were spectacular, though.

By golly, I even remember this commercial!!!

Anywho, I think that this toy is what probably inspired the background set for Larry King Live. Com’on, am I the only one who might have thought this????

The last two evenings, John has subbed for Larry on LKL. Usually we are accustomed to seeing him (John) sub for Wolf or Anderson, but having him on LKL was a nice change of pace. He did a smooth job of filling in on Larry’s seat, sans the suspenders!!!

Here are a few screengrabs:

For once it was interesting to hear John report on something OTHER than the election. Even though that OTHER thing in the news at the moment is a pretty big shocker.

Normally, news such as the Spitzer scandal wouldn’t be something that I would care to know much about. After all, he is not the first governor/senator/elected official to be caught in some kind of sordid sex scandal, nor will he be the last. And while I think it is absolutely horrible what he has put his family through, I still think that private matters are just that – private – and should be none of our business…

What really is upsetting about what Spitzer has done, rather, is the cold and calculated way he went about doing this. I mean, come on!!! It’s one thing to have some indiscretions, but the fact that he had to go through all these lengths to carefully orchestrate his plans is disgusting. His “affairs” were not just casual flings… they were cold-hearted, manipulated, well thought-out plans. He knew exactly what he wanted and he knew exactly how to do it.

And probably just like most Americans, we can forgive our elected officials for their personal indiscretions, but the blatant HYPOCRISY is what we have a harder time in understanding or sympathizing with.

I feel badly for his wife, I really do. She is a very beautiful woman and without a doubt she is going through a horrible personal pain. It is disheartening to see her standing by his side as he is announcing his resignation today. I hope she has the courage and strength to get through this with grace and do what is best for her and her family.

Well, that’s all for me folks. For the mid-day hump-day perk-me-up, here is a funny video. WordPress has limitations on video embedding, so you will have to click here to watch the video.  Enjoy!

Ok guys, here’s the barnyard hall I rented out for today’s Primary party. Sorry it doesn’t look like much, but I’m an on extremely tight budget here.

However, you know the old saying, don’t judge a book by it’s cover, so please take a look at the inside accommodations:

Not bad, huh? Here is our BBQ spread for the evening:

Oh and look who just showed up!

Yay!!! Josh Groban is here!!!! And he just agreed to start off the BBQ with a song! I asked a special request if he could please sing my all-time favorite song… He has so nicely obliged. Thank you Josh, let’s listen in…

Applause applause applause!!!!!

And now, he’s agreed to sing “My Heart Was Home Again”. (Embedding has been disabled, so you will have to click on the direct link right here.)

Yeesh, I am getting goosebumps! Thank you Josh for those performances!!!

And now, to switch musical gears a bit and to get in the mood for our Texas BBQ, here is Alabama with, “I You’re Gonna Play In Texas, You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band”

Well, I’m off to go cast my ballot, I will be checking in later to see how the BBQ is going. AC, please make sure that the guests are comfortable. Mebz, I did happen to see this guy hanging around in the back of the barn, I don’t know who he is, he was not invited on the guest list, so when I get back I don’t want to hear about any hanky panky from you young lady!

Behind The Scenes And A Little Spoofing

Tuesday, 02.26.08  Posted By: Millie

CNN’s All Access highlighted a snippet of John speaking about what goes on behind the scenes during a Presidential debate, namely last week’s debate in Austin. John was briefly interviewed by the all access reporter and he (John) described this secret room a.k.a. the “vault”.

What makes the room so secretive? Well, let’s just say it’s the paperwork he was holding in his hands.

Yup. The questions for the evening’s debate. John remarked, “If I shared them, I’d have to take you hostage… or worse!”

Mebz sent over a delightful little find, an SNL spoof off the Austin debate. Apparently the original was already taken off of You Tube, but good ol’ resourceful Mebz was able to locate it at a different site. Check it out.

Mebz video-capped some shots of Jason Sudeikis portraying John.

On a last note for today, MCWFan sent in a note to me about this past Sunday’s Late Edition:

“John is subbing for Wolf. He’s doing a great job. John interviewed Chuck Hagel and they discussed Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan. How amazing CNN is having some international discussion. If you read Cyn’s ATC post of yesterday, you’ll see many of us are complaining about all the endless campaign coverage and the lack of international news of late.”

Thanks for rightfully pointing out that there still is other news out there besides the elections, MCWFan!

Have a good Tuesday folks and see you soon.
