Warm and Fuzzy

Friday, November 14, 2009 Posted by: Mebz

Hello Johnthenewsking readers.  I know… I know… I’ve been slacking in my blogging duties for the last few weeks.  I have reasons, but nothing that any of you would find interesting, I’m sure.  Regardless, I’m back!  Miss me?  I’ve missed you guys.  Before we get to the JK-goodness I just wanted to say: Thank You.  I was reminded, yesterday, just how kind, thoughtful, sweet and dear “cyber” friends can be.  Those of you who are frequent visitors here at JTNK, Wareabouts, ATA, ATC, and War Journos know that we are a fun-loving group of CNN fans.  I was reminded of that yesterday when MWmcfan completely, and unexpectedly made my week, she knows why.  YOU ROCK GIRL!

Alright, enough with the Hallmark moment.  Game face people!  I haven’t posted anything since October 21st!  What could possibly have happened in the meantime?

All Saints Day

America rockin’ the Vote.untitled

You might be asking yourself: What now?  After such a long, tiresome campaign, how can I go back to normal life?  Especially if you’re CNN’s Chief National Correspondent.  Well, as it turns out, you interview the Governor of California, fill-in for Larry King and Wolf Blitzer and teach NBA commentators a thing or two about how to use sophisticated technology.

Well team, it’s late and my bed is calling me.  Goodnight dearies.

That map IS magic!

Thursday, 04.24.08 Posted by: Mebz

Fishbowl DC has some behind-the-scenes pictures from Tuesday night’s primary coverage. Which is somewhat odd since CNN anchored it’s coverage from NYC, but nonetheless, here’s some pretty for you:

What would we have done this election cycle without the magic map? I can’t wait to see what other applications they figure out for that thing. In fact, the magic map has gotten so much attention that MTV, was backstage during Tuesday’s coverage. AND THEY GOT TO TOUCH IT! Whose is bigger? Did I mention there was a video with John? Go there now and watch!!! I’ll wait…..

….you back? I know you love me.

Now, yesterday, Millie mentioned the two musicians whose “crooning voices give her goosebumps.” Well, since we’ve established that I am American Idol illiterate (and hope to stay that way) I’m a rock-girl at heart so I thought I’d showcase my favorite musician. It isn’t his voice that I love, it’s his guitar playing- John Frusciante-the worlds most beautiful guitar player.

I would shed blood for this man. Most people know him as the guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, I prefer to think of him as a god among mortals. I thought I would grace you with one of his solo videos as:

Your Thursday post.

Thursday, 04.17.08 Posted by: Mebz

Hello everyone! It’s Thursday, meaning the light at the end of the tunnel is visible. This is going to be on the short side today, but I do have some goodies for you.

I have some more images from Tuesday’s NAB-RTNDA conference in Las Vegas. These are from their website.

(Yes, I know they’re tiny, I have them much bigger but WordPress apparently hates me today. I’ll work on getting them posted full size.) At least now, you can click on them for larger size.

There is a FANTASTIC video interview with John after he moderated the panel on Tuesday. Watch it here.

Don’t forget that TVNewswer promised to post their interview with John tomorrow.

If you haven’t seen JK’s interview with John McCain, has a ten minute section. Watch. I would post screencaps, but we’ve established that WordPress hates me.

I’ll be back tomorrow with your John King Picture of the Week. But for now, I’ll leave you with:

Mebz’s Weekly No-Good Irrelevant YouTube Video.

The best in Saturday morning programing.

Monday Night Blogging

Monday, 04.07.08 Posted By Millie

I had hoped to get to this post earlier in the day, and I do apologize… but you know how it is when unexpected interruptions happen! (Uh oh, now I am starting to sound like one of those ED commercials!! lol!)

I thought I would start off the evening with a few super hi-res pics of John I stumbled across. They come from this site, which talks about, what else, but John’s map manipulation skills!

Nice, huh? (Click on the picture for even larger and sharper image)

And now, downgrading to low-res, (sorry!) here are some various screencaps of John hosting The Situation Room last week.

We’ve got a few administrative changes here at Johnthenewsking. Katie and Joan, unfortunately, will no longer be blogging with us. Their contributions will be missed! We appreciate all they have done for the blog. Stay in touch girls, ok? Don’t forget, you are always welcome to guest-post in the future!

Starting today, Mebz and yours truly will be the regular blog posters at Johnthenewsking. Here is our schedule in case you want to know ahead of time who will be at the blogging helm!! We are still continuing on a Mon-Fri schedule, with posts on the weekends only in the event of breaking or urgent news.

Mondays – Millie
Tuesdays- Mebz
Wednesdays – Millie
Thursdays – Mebz
Fridays – Millie/Mebz

And now, this next bit is especially for ACAnderfan. She mentioned in the comments on Friday something about Anderson and spandex. Not having seen the program on Friday, my curiosity was piqued.

I checked out the video of Friday’s Shot Of The Day and lo and behold, there was Erica showing off a pair of spandex pants she said Anderson should use the next time he goes excercising:

Interestingly it wasn’t the spandex that caught my attention. Rather, I just couldn’t stop starting at his guns in the first picture! OMG!! Normally I am not one to fawn over Mr. Cooper but, whoa nelly! He’s got some mighty impressive biceps..

Erm.. Moving on…

If you have noticed recently, we’ve got this little Golden Girls thing going, so I would like to leave you today with the following clip. Enjoy!

The Minority Report

Monday, 03.31.08 Posted By Mille

Update: I’ve just been informed that John is filling in for Wolf on The Situation Room this afternoon.

Happy Monday everyone. The good thing is that Mondays only have to happen once a week, lol! I hope everyone had a nice and relaxing weekend. I know I did! I cannot believe that we are already 3 months into 2008. Where oh where does the time go??

Anywho, here’s a picture to get us going for today’s topic:

Why, you may ask, do I have this picture of Tom Cruise from Minority Report? Well, first of all, I think it is a fantastic movie, and it’s one of my favorite TC science fiction films. However, that is not why I posted it today. Instead, take a peek at this:

Notice the similarities?
Now, granted, John doing his thing over at the magic wall is something we’ve covered in detail before, and it really is not anything new to those of us who have been watching him on primary nights as results trickle in throughout the evening.
However, I found this little article which compared John King to Tom Cruise in Minority Report!!! This page has a video which highlights some of John’s moments at the board, shown in rapid succession, to the point where he almost really does look like TC working the computer screen in MR!! lol.
Ok, here’s a little something I just couldn’t resist throwing in.

Yup, that’s John pointing at good ol’ El Paso County in far West Texas!!! (Thanks Cyn for sending me over this clip.)
In closing today, I have a couple of screengrabs from John’s hosting of TSR last week. Enjoy and see you all tomorrow.

What up, Peeps?

Friday, 03.21.08 Posted by: Mebz

Greetings from a flooded Missouri. (Send Boat!)  Happy Good Friday and early Easter to everyone!

Hangin’ with my Peeps

Usually, I’m a purest.  Particularly with my Peeps, the yellow have been good enough for years.  But I recently had the new green variety, and I must say they are tasty.  Anyone else have opinions on the expanding color palette of Peeps?  Good? Horribly wrong?  Or am I the only one who cares about these things?

Okay, moving on… Millie put the pressure on me to do a good job today and then proceeded to steal the subject I was going to cover i.e. John in Jerusalem.  So I went hunting through the archives and found a few things to share with you today.

I found CNN’s Election Night Blog from 2004 and it’s amazing how primitive it looks compared to today’s CNN blogs.  John has a few posts on it, however the one I really wanted to share with you is from Karl Penhaul (IMO, one of CNN’s best, yet under-utilized reporters.)  In light of the 5th anniversary of the Iraq war you have to ask yourself, besides the names, how much has changed?

From Karl Penhaul, Video Correspondent for CNN, reporting near Fallujah, Iraq
“One Marine, just about old enough to vote for the first time, shook his head and said to me: “Out here this is politics of the rawest kind.” He was a grunt, not an officer.
He didn’t mean Republican-Democratic party politics or even Bush-Kerry personality politics. Clausewitz (“war is an extension of politics”) or Chairman Mao (“political power grows out of the barrel of a gun”) have written about the kind of politics this Marine was talking about. He didn’t know those names maybe; he certainly hadn’t read the textbook theory. He just sensed it, a world away from the fancy gloss-wrapped, shrink-wrapped vacuum-packed TV debates, party spin doctors and expert opinion polls.
This marine, when he’s ordered, will simply go out and do politics of the rawest kind … kicking in doors, blasting away with an M-16 assault rifle.
The outcome on the extreme edge of his political frontline isn’t about Bush or Kerry. There’s no vote and no recount, just life or death.”

If you didn’t see AC360’s Shock and Awe special last night, you missed a very fine hour of television.

Moving on.  John tidbits:

Ever wondered what a Canadian thinks of our Election coverage? National Post‘s Jian Ghomeshi likes John’s electronic thingy:  “Whiz-kid King stands at a massive computer map — stretching and seducing it, taming and testing it..”  Thanks for taking me down THAT road, Jian.

And from the JOPLIN GLOBE (Joplin, Mo.- Which is on the OTHER side of the state from me.)  By Mike Pound: “That Wolf guy and some guy with good hair named John King stood in front of a large computer screen and talked. While they talked, John King played with a map of the United States on the large computer screen. I’m not sure exactly what John was doing with map on the large computer screen but apparently it had something to do with the election. Wolf, though, was so impressed with what John was doing with the map on the large computer screen that he told the viewers that they could go to the CNN Web site and be “just like John King for the night.”

I found that sort of creepy.”    Funny.

The Primary-O-Rama Goes On… And On…

Tuesday, 02.19.08 Posted By: Millie

Tonight is another “results night” in the land of primaries and caucuses! Wisconsin, Hawaii and Washington State to be exact. That means we’ll be seeing more of this…

And this…

And this…

And this…

I’d like to buy a “A”, Pat.

Ahh, but who am I to complain??? I really am looking forward to the Texas Primary Night, when John will be zig-zagging his fingers all over our state. Who knows, maybe I will show up on one of his google image maps when he zooms in to Harris County!! I just hope nothing embarrassing shows up if he goes to street view, LOL!

On an interesting note, Obama is currently stumping just a few blocks away from me, at the Toyota Center right here in downtown Houston.

And Bill Clinton is also at a downtown hotel this evening campaigning on behalf of Hillary. Lots of traffic at the moment ’round these parts. I’m actually hearing helicopters buzzing overhead as I type this!

Now for some non-election news… John was involved with the All-Star Summit in New Orleans over the weekend. I’m not exactly sure when he was there or what his schedule was like over the last few days because he had been filing reports from the CNN studio throughout the weekend as well. Anywho, here are some pictures from the All-Star Summit Website. These were from last year’s event (There are no 2008 pictures on their site yet.)

Enjoy and have a fun night tonight watching John play at the magic wall!!!
