Monday Night Blogging

Monday, 04.07.08 Posted By Millie

I had hoped to get to this post earlier in the day, and I do apologize… but you know how it is when unexpected interruptions happen! (Uh oh, now I am starting to sound like one of those ED commercials!! lol!)

I thought I would start off the evening with a few super hi-res pics of John I stumbled across. They come from this site, which talks about, what else, but John’s map manipulation skills!

Nice, huh? (Click on the picture for even larger and sharper image)

And now, downgrading to low-res, (sorry!) here are some various screencaps of John hosting The Situation Room last week.

We’ve got a few administrative changes here at Johnthenewsking. Katie and Joan, unfortunately, will no longer be blogging with us. Their contributions will be missed! We appreciate all they have done for the blog. Stay in touch girls, ok? Don’t forget, you are always welcome to guest-post in the future!

Starting today, Mebz and yours truly will be the regular blog posters at Johnthenewsking. Here is our schedule in case you want to know ahead of time who will be at the blogging helm!! We are still continuing on a Mon-Fri schedule, with posts on the weekends only in the event of breaking or urgent news.

Mondays – Millie
Tuesdays- Mebz
Wednesdays – Millie
Thursdays – Mebz
Fridays – Millie/Mebz

And now, this next bit is especially for ACAnderfan. She mentioned in the comments on Friday something about Anderson and spandex. Not having seen the program on Friday, my curiosity was piqued.

I checked out the video of Friday’s Shot Of The Day and lo and behold, there was Erica showing off a pair of spandex pants she said Anderson should use the next time he goes excercising:

Interestingly it wasn’t the spandex that caught my attention. Rather, I just couldn’t stop starting at his guns in the first picture! OMG!! Normally I am not one to fawn over Mr. Cooper but, whoa nelly! He’s got some mighty impressive biceps..

Erm.. Moving on…

If you have noticed recently, we’ve got this little Golden Girls thing going, so I would like to leave you today with the following clip. Enjoy!

A Three-Peat

Thursday, 11.22.07

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

I was planning on taking a break from posting today, but since John hosted 360 yesterday for the third night in a row, I decided the only thing a girl can do is blog about it! lol!

The program opened with some new developments in the Natalee Holloway case.

Authorities now have three suspects in custody – the same three individuals who were held previously in connection with Natalee’s disappearance: Joran VanDerSloot and brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe. Apparently there is “new evidence” in the case against the trio, but as Susan Candiotti reported, this evidence is not being revealed yet.

John spoke with VanDerSloot’s U.S. attorney about the developments. Joe Tacopina really didn’t reveal much other than that the “new evidence” is insignificant or irrelevant.

Next, John covered a subject he knows all-too-well: campaign-o-rama! He explained how Billy Gardner, New Hampshire’s Secretary of State, finalized his state’s primary date. Here is the master calender as it stands now:

This means John will likely be on the road for a long stretch in January! After reading what he blogged about on his travel experiences, I’m sure that he’s got the routine down pat and can do it in his sleep. After all he’s only going on his, let’s see, 6th election season now?

Next, David Gergen was a guest on the show to discuss former Press Secretary Scott McClellan’s new book and allegations that the Bush administration was not forthcoming to his Press Staff with information about the Valerie Plame identity-leaking case.

It was pretty disheartening to watch archive footage (from 2003) of Scott McClellan at the press podium saying the following about Scooter Libby and Karl Rove:

“They’re important members of our White House team, and that’s why I spoke with them, so that I could come back to you and say that they were not involved. I — I had no doubt with — of that in the beginning, but I like to check my information to make sure it’s accurate before I report back to you. And that’s exactly what I did. “

Yikes. If that leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I can only imagine that it probably makes journalists who cover the White House want to just cringe even worse. If his allegations are true, it sure does leave a big stinky cloud over the White House pressroom briefings.

On a non-stinky note, Anderfans were treated last night to a segment of Cooper’s Glenn Beck interview. Beck is promoting his new book “An Inconvenient Book: Real Solutions to the World’s Biggest Problems”. He sat down with Anderson for a discussion of the book’s topics, including, among other things, issues such as illegal immigration, corporate greed and the war on drugs. Here is a YouTube video of a portion of that interview in which Cooper asks Beck a series of both personal and political “Rapid Fire” questions:

For last night’s “What were they thinking?” segment, a video was aired in which a Venezuelan lawmaker angrily decks a journalist. Iris Varela barged onto a live TV set and slapped around a reporter who had done a story several years ago about the death of her infant son. She accused him of slandering her in the story – and knocking him around on live TV was her payback! You can watch the video here. (Click the video button to the right of the story.)

John added, “I’ve been cussed at by politicians. I’ve been glared at by politicians. I’ve never been slapped or thumped with a microphone. That’s all new — a whole new world for me.”

Chad Meyers was up next with another holiday travel update. This was his third appearance in a row on AC360 – something he normally does not get to do.

In the “Keeping Them Honest” segment, David Mattingely reported on Hospital mixups in medication dosing, which has received some attention in the news lately after Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins were given an overdose of the medicine Heparin, an anti-blood clot formula.

Quaid’s twins are thankfully recovering, but Mattingley goes on to report that there have been documented cases of death in situations were 1,000 times the dose were administered! The cause? Poor labeling of the concentration strength. This was an alarming story but it’s one that David Mattingley did a excellent job of reporting on.

On to Raw Politics…it was all pie and turkey!

Last but not least, The Shot of the day was truly comical last night. It started with John talking about the traditional blowing-up of Macy’s parade balloons.

Then, Erica piped in, “I’ll see your inflatable animals, and I will raise you some ‘Dramatic Animal Video.'”

The next image was of an 85-pound turkey (!!!) submitted by a viewer in Minnesota.

John’s reaction to the size of that bird was rather cute!

That’s all folks, for today. Enjoy the rest of your Thanksgiving Day with all its blessings and thanks for stopping by!

Change is Good And A JK360 Recap

Tuesday, 11.06.07

Ok, so this is yet another look for the blog in recent days, but to be honest I didn’t like the last layout so much after all… the world of blogging is sometimes all about experimentation, so please bear with me, folks!

For those who were just getting used to the other look, I apologize for another change so soon, but I think I have finally settled on a layout that I like. For example, icons and other text lines are at the top of the page so you don’t have to scroll all the way to the bottom to view category/tag information and comment stats. I’m a stickler for details like that, lol!

Maybe the gray will take come getting used to, but other than that everything else is in place the way I like it.

And now, on to the review of last night’s ACJK360!

I know a lot of Anderfans are sorely missing Mr. Cooper right now after more than a week of sitting through guest anchors, but the good thing for us Kingfans, the flip side of the coin is that we get to enjoy John hosting the show!

Last night, he started out the program talking about tensions brewing in Pakistan. “A nuclear timebomb perhaps ready to explode” is how he put it, highlighting President Musharraf’s role in the recent escalations and the U.S. reaction to these developments.

Peter Bergen reported on the relations between the White House and Pakistan. Bergen next appeared with Reza Aslan for a 360 roundtable discussion of the current situation and the potential for absolutely disturbing consequences.

Tom Foreman gave us a gripping explanation about the tension between Pakistan and Afghanistan and why the US should be worried. Regarding concerns over nuclear capabilities, he bleakly put it this way, “If Pakistan descends into chaos, the Taliban and other extremists could rush into the country and try to seize those nukes. And then what?”

As doomy and gloomy as that report was, I must move on to my next topic…

I was intrigued to hear John interview Joel Osteen, who is a prominent figure right here in Houston. (His church used to be the Rocket’s Compaq Arena, which should tell you the size of his local congregation.) Osteen is on the circuit to publicize his new book, “Becoming A Better You”.

Now, if you have been reading this blog for any length of time you know that I rarely include my own religious/political/social opinions about the very material I cover; however, this is one of the times I have to make an exception and speak my mind.

I could not believe my ears when Joel Osteen compared gays to drug addicts and that he invites both groups to his church so they can get some “help”. I am sorry to say, but his statements just reeked with hypocrisy.

Why? Well, just before he made the “help” remark, he stated, “I think God wants everybody to be prosperous, to be healthy, to have good relationships…he wants us to be blessed.”

Allrighty, let me get this straight… According to Osteen, God wants everybody to have good relationships, but whooops, there is a condition? God’s lawyers inserted an asterisk right after His definition of “everybody”?

Sooo… If you are in a happy heterosexual relationship, you’re given God’s blessing… but, heaven forbid, if you happen to be in a happy homosexual relationship, well, that is negated according to the fine print, and therefore you need “help” in the same way a drug addict needs help? Excuse me Mr. Osteen?

In the past, I generally have liked Joel Osteen’s positive and affirming messages, but this is one time that I am totally turned off by what he had to say. Thank goodness John abruptly dove into another question right after Joel Osteen made that “help” remark. I don’t think I could have stood hearing him make any more hypocritical statements.

Why does this irritate me so much? I’ll tell you why. My brother is in a very loving, very happy and healthy relationship with an incredible man who is loved in our family just as much as my other brothers’ spouses. To hear someone like Joel lump my brother in the same category as a drug addict is flat-out insulting and rips into the very core of this issue, the very core of who my brother is. Insinuating he needs “help” is an affront not only to my brother and his partner, but to my family and to the millions of gay citizens around the world. Joel Osteen really does not have a clue about homosexuality and it’s a shame he is going to make millions selling a book about “Becoming A Better You”.

BTW, regarding Joel’s words about homosexuality, other bloggers are upset about this as well.

This concludes for today Millie’s stepping out of her box and venting her opinion on a political/social/religious issue. *steps carefully back into box*

And now, back to: “Just the facts, ma’am, just the facts” (note: disclaimer ahead)

After the Erica Hill piece about Oprah’s Leadership Academy scandal, Raw Politics came to us live from Iowa… Tom was there with the Election Express bus as his backdrop.

How cute was that, that Tom joked about how John needs to come on over and fill up the bus with gas, and he (John) offered instead to come on down to Iowa and bring Tom an ethanol-powered space heater!

And what about last night’s Shot Of The Day? It was none other than King Tut’s mummy unveiled.. the “Boy King”! Isn’t his sarcophagus just amazingly beautiful?

I thought John’s banter with Erica was exceptionally lively last night – listening to him go on about his age was actually quite amusing!* Here is the transcript of their exchange:

“KING: Not too shabby. No more stone condo, but the boy king will be resting comfortably inside a climate-controlled Plexiglas box to keep his mummy from turning to dust. And finally, something that makes me feel young.

HILL: Oh, John.

KING: I was waiting. I’m waiting. Help me out.

HILL: You don’t have to worry about feeling young, John.

KING: Much better.

HILL: Didn’t you just have your 30th birthday or something in.

KING: Thank you, Erica. The 21st is next week.”

That’s a wrap for last night’s summary of AC360. To all my wonderful readers, have a great day!

*disclaimer: my “just the facts, ma’am” approach to blogging doesn’t apply when it comes to my biased musings about John!
